The origins of Dragon Boat racing can be traced back over 2,000 years to ancient Chinese rituals and celebrations. These races were initially part of folk customs and religious ceremonies, often held to honor the memory of Qu Yuan, a revered poet and statesman. The boats themselves, adorned with dragon heads and tails, were believed to invoke the spirit of the dragon, an emblem of water and agriculture, to ensure bountiful harvests and protection from evil spirits.

Today, Dragon Boat racing has evolved into an international sport, celebrating not only its cultural heritage but also the spirit of teamwork and competition. Modern races involve teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer who maintains the paddling rhythm, and a steerer who navigates the boat. This sport is a thrilling blend of strength, endurance, and coordination, making it a favorite among both participants and spectators.

Although Hokulele does not currently focus on Dragon Boat racing, our members are actively involved in this exciting sport through collaboration with the Lone Star Dragons. Our paddlers train and compete with this esteemed team, participating in local, national, and international competitions. Some of our members have also had the honor of representing Team USA, showcasing their skills on a global stage.
