At Hokulele, we actively promote safety while creating an enjoyable environment for all members and guests. Whether you’re paddling your own boat or using club equipment, during practice or at an officially sanctioned race, it’s crucial to be vigilant and prepared for whatever comes your way on the water.
Paddling in our local waters, while not as hazardous as some ocean conditions, presents unique challenges. Weather conditions, tides, and currents require constant awareness and adaptability. Being prepared and following safety guidelines is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable paddling experience.
General Safety Guidelines
- Wear Appropriate Apparel: Be prepared to fall. Use a wetsuit/drysuit, booties, gloves, and a hat.
- Wear Your PFD and Leash: Always wear a personal flotation device (preferably a chest one) and your leash. Both may be necessary.
- Paddle with a Partner: There is strength in numbers.
- Have a Plan: Inform someone on land of your departure point, direction, and expected return time. Check in with them once you return.
- Check Your Equipment: Ensure everything is in good working order.
- Take a Communication Device: Bring your phone or another communication device.
- Check the Weather and Wind Forecast: Don’t get caught unaware.
- Paddle Close to Shore: The closer you are to land, the quicker you can get out of the water in an emergency.
- Know Your Limits: Avoid conditions beyond your ability. If you’re unsure, don’t go out.
- Have a Clear Path to the Water: Ensure a safe entry and exit route.
