Triumph at the Texas Water Safari
We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of our very own coach Eric Whicker and his partner Joe Gessinger at the World’s Toughest Canoe Race, the Texas Water Safari. This grueling four-day, non-stop race spans 260 miles, starting from San Marcos and concluding in Seadrift.
Paddling boat #57, an 18′ standard class vessel from the San Marcos Canoe Club, Eric and Joe navigated through challenging conditions with remarkable resilience and skill. Their boat was named in homage to Joe’s employee and friend Ron Garland’s father, Clay, who was an avid paddler and passed away last year.
With unwavering support from their dedicated Team Captains, Bill M, and James C; Eric and Joe demonstrated exceptional teamwork and endurance. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to their captains for their invaluable assistance throughout the race.
We are incredibly proud to announce that Eric and Joe finished 1st in their class (Standard) and 10th overall, completing the 260-mile journey in an impressive 52 hours and 12 minutes. This remarkable feat is a testament to their hard work, determination, and passion for paddling. Congratulations, Eric and Joe, on this phenomenal achievement! You have made Hokulele proud and inspired us all with your dedication and spirit.
